Are marshamallows vegetarian?

I'm making cupcakes and they call for marshmallows and jello. It's an odd recipe, but it's supposed to be really fun to make and delicious. I was going to make it for one of my friends, but she's vegan. Now I KNOW that jello is NOT vegan, so I was going to leave that out, and since marshmallows hold gelatin in them, I'm pretty sure they aren't vegan either. So does anyone know where I can buy vegan marshmallows? I live in NYC, so will that info help?
